In our mission to spread the good word regarding the genre-bending compact crossover known as the Nissan Qashqai, we’ve both told you about the vehicle itself, and why you should buy it! However, in our haste, we neglected to give it the origin story it so richly deserves. It’s now a regular occurrence where people visit one of our three Go Nissan dealerships, fall in love with the Qashqai’s unique style and peppy performance, then awkwardly mutter something along the lines of, “I want the chachi? The cash-key. The tchotchke . . . I don’t know how to say it, but that one!” So, here we are, explaining the origin of the Nissan Qashqai—which, by the way, is pronounced cash-ki.
What exactly is a Qashqai?
In 2007, early in the great crossover boom, Nissan first released the Qashqai upon the world. A muscular yet compact frame allowed the driver to sit above the fray, offering an exceptional view of the road while still providing car-like performance. Space? Check. SUV-like capabilities? Check. A style all its own? Oh, you bet. Only creating a vehicle this unique wasn’t enough. The Nissan brain trust met in the war room at Nissan HQ, and while seated around a giant table, fiercely debated what to call the soon-to-be flagship compact crossover. Suggestions were shouted; suggestions were shouted down.
“What about the Titan?”
“We already have one of those?”
Then, a brilliant suggestion cut through the air.
No one knew how to spell it, or what it meant, but they could feel it. The person who made the suggestion went on to explain that the Qashqai are a semi-nomadic tribe from the mountains of Iran, renowned for their woven products: pile carpets and tapestries, handmade from the finest and softest wool in the world. Harvested from the sheep they tended to, while exploring the mountains and valleys of southern Iran. From that moment on, the Qashqai had a name to go along with its identity.
What’s in a name?
Despite people’s difficulty in pronouncing it, the name Qashqai made perfect sense. After all, the Qashqai people are known for creating beautiful and eye-catching goods, all while roaming through some of the toughest terrain in the world. The Nissan Qashqai, with its beautifully-designed exterior and rugged capability, is exemplary of this duality. Meant for the modern nomad that hits the highway in search of adventure every weekend, the Qashqai also features the kind of luxurious interior that brings unparalleled comfort to your workday commute. Like the Qashqais artfully weaving their wares, the Qashqai deftly weaves through traffic, and does so with a style unmatched by the competition that was so thoroughly “inspired” by Nissan’s revolutionary compact crossover.
The Qashqai name has been one that’s needed some getting used to. In Australia it was introduced as the Dualis, and was rebranded in the United States as the Rogue Sport. However, the spirit behind this spunky crossover is stronger than ever. You know how to pronounce it, and you know what it means. Now you just need to call or get yourself down to one of Go Nissan’s three Edmonton dealerships, and you can test drive the unique and exciting Nissan Qashqai today!
